Chapter 7: Hiking Boots and Heels

One morning, five months before the cancer diagnosis, Mike lifted his T-shirt between sips of coffee and shuffling through the Washington Post. “Look at this,” he said with no concern and showed me the spot in the center of his chest. Just above his ribs, there was the slightest indentation. “I think I have caving-in- syndrome,” he said.
